With the advance of science and technology and a colossal increase in the information and knowledge, now greater emphasis is laid on study of various science and related subjects in the curricula. Next priority is given, perhaps, to economics, commerce, political science and to such subjects as prepare a person for some profession or competition because, in these times of price rise and economic stress, one intends to settle down in life at the earliest opportunity. For these and for many other reasons, little or no place is given to cultivation of moral values and to teaching of such knowledge as may enhance the quality of life and character of the educated and may equip him or her for hard times in life when one is called upon to handle one’s problems with patience, tolerance, self-confidence, and a sense of integrity, honesty and with due consideration to the well-being of all or the greater good of mankind.

The youth have to be imparted such education as comes to terms with the parochial, the fissiparous, the philistine and the mundane tendencies and gives them the universal consciousness of world brotherhood. Such an education which creates harmony and relates not merely to the phenomenon but the lasting and creates a feeling of inner satisfaction is the spiritual education.

In the absence of such education, one finds indiscipline in schools and colleges, rise in crime in cities and in the seats of learning, and moral debasement in the whole society. The youth are turbulent and, out of desperation, they indulge in acts of violence and destruction at many places. The remedy, therefore, lies in imparting such education as enables the youth to channelize their energy to creative work and to achievement of social good. This is the task of the spiritual education, which is universal and is, therefore, different from religious education.
